Brett is a Ph.D. student in kinesiology. His research is centered on improving the quality of life for patients with kidney disease on hemodialysis. Currently, he is focusing on nutrition and physical activity interventions in this population through behavior change methods and reducing levels of depression. He also is the graduate coordinator of the Lifetime Fitness Program on campus. Brett holds a MS in exercise physiology from East Stroudsburg University, East Stroudsburg, PA.

Hsin-Yu (Shelly) Fang, M.S.

Shelly is a Ph.D. student in kinesiology. Her research is centered on the mechanisms of muscle wasting in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. Currently, she is focusing on investigating the role of muscle sodium in skeletal muscle pathophysiology in hemodialysis patients, mainly using bioimaging techniques combined with muscle biopsies. She is also a graduate research assistant with the Nutrition and Exercise Performance Research Group directed by Dr. Nicholas Burd. Shelly holds a B.S. in Physical Therapy and a M.S. in Neurophysiology from National Taiwan University, Taiwan.

Alexis King, M.S.

Alexis is a Ph.D. student in exercise physiology and has a Master’s Degree in exercise physiology from University of the Pacific, Stockton, Calif. Alexis was born and raised in California and enjoys hiking, a glass of red wine while she cooks, kayaking, and caring for her cat, Cornelius. Her current research interests include chronic kidney failure and premature aging. She is currently a graduate assistant for the Lifetime Fitness Program (LFP) and enjoys helping the members achieve better balance in their activities of daily living.

 

Shu Kwan, M.S., R.D.

Shu is a Ph.D. student in nutrition sciences. Her research focuses on improving the blood pressure and nutritional status of hemodialysis patients via home delivered meals. She holds a M.S. in human nutrition and a B.S. in human environmental services from the University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa as well as a B.A. in environmental economics and policy from the University of California, Berkley.
