Observational study on hydration status of maintenance hemodialysis patients

The purpose of this study is to analyze the hydration status of hemodialysis patients before and after a dialysis treatment and determine its relationship with sodium and fluid intake. Results from this observational study aim to further develop interventions to decrease and prevent overhydration in maintenance hemodialysis patients. Chronic overhydration increases the risk of high blood pressure, altered cardiac structure and cardiac failure. Sodium intake has been linked to fluid gains between hemodialysis treatments.

To asses this, researchers will use bioelectrical spectroscopy (BIS) as a noninvasive measure of the participant’s hydration status. This will be paired with information gained about sodium intake that is collected by a researcher asking dietary intake questions.
